The purpose of this paper was to highlight the implications and challenges of Universities as learning organizations in Nigeria. ‘Learning organization’ is a concept that is becoming an increasingly widespread philosophy in our contemporary society. It has a strong humanistic orientation and it is a place where people continually expand their capacity to produce results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured and where people are continually learning how to learn together. In order to implement learning organization techniques, the Universities tackled some disciplines which are essential to a learning organization. Such techniques are team learning, shared vision and system thinking. As a result of this, the paper is confined on how Nigerian Universities are committed to creating continuous learning opportunities, encouraging collaboration and team learning, establishing systems to capture and share learning, and connecting the university organization to its environment. It also proposed the need for radical rethinking of the core functions of the Universities in Nigerian.

Introduction

University education as a learning organization started in Europe in the eleventh century, and one of the first universities in Africa was the one in Timbuktu. Fafunwa (1971) has indicated that the 1945 reports of the commission on Higher Education in the colonies have shown that since the world wars, Nigerians have always demonstrated an insuppressible desire for higher education because it was seen as an important weapon against the colonial masters in the quest for emancipation and national development. Children are often bullied and teased during their school years. For children with learning disabilities this teasing can be relentless and make them terrified to go to school each day. Being in special education classes carry with it a certain stigma, causing other students to ridicule and judge the students in these classes. Often times, safety can become an issue and students have to be sent to other schools. Many parents at this point choose to home school their child who has learning disabilities. By home schooling their child, they can insure these bullying will not occur during the school day.

Many parents may worry that their child will not get good social interaction when they are home schooled. This is not the case. Children with learning disabilities thrive in sports and other activities. Get your child involved in soccer or baseball, or find out from them what they enjoy. Some children need creative outlets such as acting or dancing; these are great ideas for getting the social interaction with their peers. You can also get them involved in activities such as 4H if they enjoy animals, or cub scouts for those that love the outdoors. There are so many options, do not feel as if your child will suffer from not having friends by being home schooled.
